Since I live in Texas, I wrote Ted Cruz encouraging him to vote against Betsey DeVos for Secretary of Education. I honestly knew it was probably an exercise in futility, but I did it anyway. The confirmation was on February 7, 2017, and today (May 4, 2017) I received a response via email.
Here is his letter:
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Thank you for contacting me regarding the nomination of Betsy DeVos to be Secretary of Education. Input from fellow Texans significantly informs my decision-making and empowers me to better represent the state. I seriously doubt that he listened to anyone but the advisors from the Republican Party.
Texans have long called for education reform – ensuring that all of our students, regardless of income or zip code, have the opportunity to attend effective, motivating, and challenging schools. I believe that a quality education is essential for every child, family, and community. However, every child is different, which is why families should have a variety of options when deciding how to educate their children.
As you may know, on February 7, 2017 the Senate voted to confirm Secretary DeVos’s nomination. I supported her confirmation as welcome news for students and parents in Texas and across our great nation. Secretary DeVos brings decades of remarkable experience advocating for policies and programs that empower families and remove barriers to academic choice. She has only advocated for charters and vouchers when 90% of the students in the country still attend public schools.
School choice isn’t about raising one educational model above all others, and it’s not about doing away with public schools – it’s about making all schools better, and giving families the freedom to choose whatever type of school that will best help their children learn and grow. Secretary DeVos has made a commitment to fight to return the regulation of public education where it belongs – to parents and teachers back home in our local school districts. So if we underfund public schools and return the control back to the local district and parent then they can be held accountable instead of the politicians that created the situation.
Thank you again for sharing your views with me. Please feel free to contact me in the future about any issue important to your family. It is an honor to serve you and the people of Texas. If only he served me and my family. He only serves himself and his bank account.
Senator Ted Cruz
