State Board of Education Chairwoman Barbara Cargill, R-The Woodlands, who added the change would help restore “pride and value” to teaching.(This is her response to raising the minimum GPA to enter a teacher education program).
In order to restore “pride and value” to education you must start by making teacher part of the process to improve it.
Then you must empower them to teach the whole child instead of making them test taking teacher robots. Teach the Test…Teach the Test…Teach the Test. It kind of reminds me of the old Dunkin Donuts commercial :”Got to make the donuts, Got to make the donuts, Got to make the donuts.
When the stat leadership begins to show respect for educators through their actions, then the pride and value will return.
1. Develop a funding formula that a long term fix not another 5 year Band-Aid.
2. Contribute more to offset the cost of medical insurance. There hasn’t been an increase in state contribution since the program began.
3. Limit the teacher workload. A teacher with 200 plus students on their class roll has limited effectiveness.
